Facts About Tripunithura

You rarely come across royalty on the street in your daily life. But in Tripunithura, a small town near Kochi in Kerala, it is possible. Almost everyone in this city has a royal connection, and every house is a little palace. The royal connection dates back to the 19th century Hill Palace, which is now a museum of local art and history. Tripunithura Hill Palace, the last seat of the reign of the Kochi Rajah.

Countless accounts explain the origin of the word “Tripunithura”, the first of which has been attributed to “Pooni” or “Pooneeram”, which means “to vibrate”. The story goes like this: Lord Krishna presented an idol that he worshipped to Arjuna and asked him to find the supreme place for its installation. It is believed that Arjuna placed this idol in his bag called Pooneeram (in the local language), in which arrows are kept. When he got to the place, he called out “Pooneeram Thura”, which means “open the bag”, and that spawned the name “Poonitura”.
